Brian Mulroney dead at 84

Former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney served as Canada’s 18th prime minister. He died aged 84. Daughter Caroline Mulroney, now a cabinet minister in Ontario’s provincial government, made the announcement on X Thursday evening. “On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family,” his daughter Caroline Mulroney, a veteran cabinet minister in Doug Ford’s Ontario government, wrote. Mulroney suffered health problems off and on through his life. He was never an athlete and there were no press photos of him water-skiing a la Jean Chretien or back-flipping into a pool a la Pierre Trudeau. He was a heavy smoker for years before quitting. In his memoirs he wrote candidly about his realization in early 1980 that “I had developed what could only be described as a serious drinking problem.” He quit drinking on St-Jean-Baptiste Day that year. He was found to have a lesion on his lung in 2005 and underwent successful surgery. However, he |
subsequently developed pancreatitis and spent several weeks in hospital.
In April, Mulroney was treated for prostate cancer in Montreal. Caroline Mulroney said in August that his health was improving daily following the cancer treatment and a recent heart procedure. Brian Mulroney was just weeks shy of his 85th birthday. Mulroney was part of the conservative trifecta in the west that rose to power in the 1980s, along with British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and U.S. president Ronald Reagan. He served as prime minister from 1984, taking over from John Turner in a landslide election, until 1993, when he resigned and was replaced by Kim Campbell. Born in Baie-Comeau, Que., Mulroney studied politics and the law before entering elected politics. He’s best known, decades later, for his negotiations leading to the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement, which later became the North American Free Trade Agreement, his unpopular introduction of the federal GST and his wide-ranging privatization of Crown corporations, including Petro Canada and Air Canada. |
