An award for black medical students honours a Toronto surgeon
By Scott Anderson March 21, 2012
With her family, Beverley created the Dr. J. Douglas Salmon Award for Black Medical Students in honour of her late husband. Douglas graduated from medicine at U of T in 1955, after earning a BA in 1951 https://magazine.utoronto.ca/.../douglas-salmon-award.../
Beverley Salmon: “Douglas was born in 1923, the youngest of six children. His mother and father both died when he was a child, and a widowed aunt took in all of the children. She had been trained as a nurse, but because of racism at that time was unable to work as one. They had very little money.
Douglas was channelled into “commercial” courses in high school. He graduated at the top of his class, but wanted to attend university – so he went back to high school for two years in the evenings to get the subjects he needed. He worked during the day.
At U of T, he was one of only four black students in his medical school class. He received a scholarship, but to cover his expenses he also worked part-time. In second year, he was voted class president.
His family and friends knew what a struggle it was for him to pay his way through university. We also knew how much he benefited from the scholarship he received: he went on to become a very successful surgeon. We wanted to extend the same opportunity to students today.
Douglas and the other black medical students in his class really had to assert themselves to get a good placement, even though they all graduated in the top third of their class. I think even today black students have to prove themselves by working harder.”

MAYORAL BY ELECTION SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 26, 2023
Dear Friends and Neighbours,
Earlier this month, Mayor John Tory announced that he would be resigning as of February 17. Effective immediately, Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie will assume many of the duties and responsibilities of the Mayor, which include presiding over City Council meetings and representing the City at official functions. We have been advised by the City Clerk that the Deputy Mayor will not be permitted to exercise the "Strong Mayor powers" set out in Provincial Bills 3 and 39. You can find more information about the mayoral transition process on the City's website, here. At the upcoming March 29 meeting, City Council will declare the Office of the Mayor vacant and initiate a by-election. Once a by-election has been initiated, the Municipal Elections Act requires a window of 30 to 60 days for mayoral candidates to file their nomination papers, and for the by-election to be held 45 days after nominations close. In order for the City to begin recruiting election staff and booking voting locations as soon as possible, the City Clerk has set the date for the by-election as Monday, June 26, 2023. MAYOR JOHN TORY
OFFICIALLY RESIGNS TODAY

DEPUTY MAYOR JENNIFER McKELVIE TOOK OVER AS OF 5pm
|
John Tory formally resigns as mayor of Toronto effective Friday
https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/john-tory-formally-resigns-as-mayor-of-toronto-effective-friday-1.6276159 |
As of 5pm today, Friday, February 17th,
John Tory has officially resigned as Mayor of Toronto. His announcement a week ago that he would be stepping down sent shockwaves throughout the city. Many residents are disappointed that Mayor Tory’s tenure is ending in this manner. Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie will assume some of the functions of the Mayor's office until a by-election is held. |
|
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/john-tory-final-day-mayor-1.6751834
John Tory has resigned as Mayor of Toronto. In a shocking and swift turn of events, Tory stepped down after admitting to having an affair with a former member of his staff.
Tory's announcement came during an evening press conference at City Hall. He took no questions but made a brief statement to members of the media who were present. Tory, who is married to his wife Barbara Hackett of 45 years, blamed the affair on a "serious error of judgment" and asked for privacy as he takes time to spend with his wife and family. Here's Tory's full statement. I want to update Torontonians on a difficult personal matter. During the pandemic, I developed a relationship with an employee in my office in a way that did not meet the standards to which I hold myself as Mayor and as a family man. The relationship ended by mutual consent earlier this year. During the course of our relationship sometime ago, the employee decided to pursue employment outside City Hall and secured a job elsewhere. I recognize that permitting this relationship to develop was a |
serious error in judgment on my part.
It came at a time when Barb, my wife of 40-plus years and I were enduring many lengthy periods apart while I carried out my responsibilities during the pandemic. As a result, I have decided I will step down as Mayor so I can take the time to reflect on my mistakes and to do the work of rebuilding the trust of my family. I will be working with the City Manager, the City Clerk and Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie to ensure an orderly transition in the coming days. While I deeply regret having to step away from a job I love, in a city I love even more, I believe in my heart it is best to fully commit myself to the work required to repair these most important relationships. As well, I think it is important for the Office of the Mayor not to in any way be tarnished and not to see the City government itself put through a prolonged period of controversy, arising out of this error in judgement on my part, especially in light of the challenges we face as a city. I am deeply sorry and apologize unreservedly to the people of |
Toronto and to all those hurt by my actions including my staff, my colleagues and the public service.
Most of all, I apologize to my wife Barb and my family, whom I have let down more than anyone else. I hope the privacy of all of those impacted by my actions can be respected and that includes me. I think as you know I am a naturally private person notwithstanding some of the jobs I have had and I hope you will respect that, and the privacy of everyone else as well, especially my wife and family. I have made the Integrity Commissioner aware of the relationship and asked him to review it. I want to thank the people of Toronto for trusting me as Mayor. It has been the job of a lifetime, and while I have let them and my family down in this instance, I have nonetheless been deeply honoured by the opportunity to serve the people of this wonderful city and I believe I did some good for the city I truly love particularly during the pandemic. I'm usually known for taking as many questions as you want, but on this occasion I'll let my statement speak for itself. Thank you. |
